One thing Nonviolent Communication emphasizes, like other books I've read, is the value of empathy. It also echoes Gottman's book and Stanford GSB's Connect book about staying on your side and discussing your emotions. This book reinforces these ideas with examples, which is helpful.
It taught me about expressing needs and desired behavioral changes, instead of labeling personalities. I learned the difference between permissible parenting and nonviolent communication with kids. This book is not very long and is filled with solid principles and clear examples. I plan to reread it to weave it into my day-to-day. A challenging part for me was understanding how to be empathetic and delve into the needs behind someone's complaints when they are agitated or angry. My concern is that the other person might get annoyed with what might seem like psychoanalysis.
