I was fascinated that geography, not democracy, politics, or the economy, drove past wars and drives future military spending. Countries have their own geographic strengths and weaknesses, which affect their sense of security. Russia was invaded about every 33 years. So, they take proactive steps, which include invading other countries. Countries often desire a year-round warm water port. This is because armies and air forces have limits on how far they can operate from their own country, unlike the Navy. This confused me because it suggests we will remain in this hierarchy of power, whereas Factfulness suggests the opposite.
