Book Review: 2/5 Impact On Me (Book By Rick Rubin)

I was surprised to discover that this book is philosophical, not practical. I read its description or review and expected it to be a practical book about creativity. As a (side hobby) creator, I searched for practical insights to enhance my content creation. Yet, the book offered few examples and primarily delivered preachy content. So, it was not practical or memorable for me.

One concept that resonated with me is that everyone is a creator. For example, engaging in a conversation is a form of creation. Another is that the book suggests beginning edits with a clean slate instead of adhering to a checklist. The clean slate encourages a broader perspective. For example, listen to your song recording overall. It also emphasizes that good artists draw inspiration from each other rather than compete, such as the Beach Boys and The Beatles. It had very few such anecdotes.

Another significant topic is the tension between content creation and distribution. Distribution is the business side of content. Successful content often leads the artist to increase business activities, but that can distract them from the creative process.

I rated this book's impact on me at 2/5 because it is limited in practical use. Had I known its philosophical nature, I might not have read it. It required a second reading for me to confirm that I understood its content.
